  • Hey guys, I’ve got a problem with my shading. First I drew my base layer with an HB pencil, then I added the darker shading on the nose and cheeks with a 4HB. Even though I blended everything with a cotton swab, it still looks really blotchy. How can I fix this so it becomes smooth and even? I don’t really understand what I’m doing wrong.

    • Hello there, probably our experts could comment fairly, but I want to know do you use a reference image? Your outlines are not aligned,

I can’t imagine and draw especially the shades. The shades provide a distance perspective, thus creating the 3D feel to it.

Hey Hermann, thanks for sharing your drawing and honestly, it’s great that you’re paying attention to the shading issues. That awareness already puts you ahead of most beginners.
So here’s what’s really happening, in a simple and friendly way. Your shading is struggling because the layers aren’t building up smoothly. You start with an HB… Read more

        • Thank you very much for your comment and your opinion, Master! I’ll try to get a grip on it.
I’ve only been drawing for three weeks, so I still have a lot to learn, but I’m addicted to getting better – especially when it comes to proportions and shading, the most important parts.
I would be very grateful if you could give me a 5-minute… Read more

          • Hi Hermann,

You started drawing three weeks ago? Why on earth would you make it so difficult for yourself by drawing a human face 😱🫢

I’m not judging you in any way by the way! I also started with a human eye and the next step was drawing an advanced portrait of a girl with water on her face. I even was disappointed that it didn’t look that well…

          • 👏 and drawing a realistic baby is one of the hardest things to draw. You won’t believe how many portraits of my son ended up in the 🗑️

For that reason I once asked Ali to do a tutorial of realistic drawing of a child. Lucky for me I made it…of my son. It still hangs in my livingroom to this day.

This is absolutely beautiful work, Larry. The expression, the wrinkles, the flow of the beard, the sense of age and wisdom… everything is handled with so much care and patience. You’ve captured that calm, powerful presence really well. And your value control here is spot on, especially around the eyes and forehead where the contrast pulls the… Read more

Your drawing is great. I love the details in the head scarf, the neckless, the hands and wrinkles.

This is a really solid first stippling exercise, Larry! 👏
Your dot placement is consistent and the form of the shell reads nicely. If you keep building up the density in the shadow areas, you’ll get even stronger depth and texture.

This looks beautiful! Charcoal in dark lighting is not easy at all, and you handled the softness and transitions really well. The muzzle and whiskers are especially clean that sharp white against the deep shadow gives it a perfect glow.

It’s actually looking pretty good so far. The drawing just isn’t fully developed yet, so your eyes are picking up that “off” feeling. Once you darken the surrounding values and finish the skin tones, the water on the forehead will naturally pop more. No need for a white paint marker right now just keep building the tones and it will settle… Read more

                                      • Which series of Strathmore Bristol smooth do you mean? I do own the 300-series with that weird texture in the paper. It’s not my favourite.

I started again with the drawing. 🫣 I’m just so annoyed with the cream paper. This time on Strathmore Mixed media – 400 series.

Voici le dernier dessin que je viens de réaliser. Grace à ce nouveau site et cette communauté, l’envie est très grande de poursuivre cet apprentissage du dessin pour me perfectionner.
