Drawing Community 2 weeks agoWeathered fisherman
This is a portrait i drew in 1964 when i was in the Army and had a lot of time on my hands. It is the first portrait i had drawn and also the last until about 6 or 7 months ago. I recently got the urge to redraw the fisherman with more details and texture, using white charcoal on black paper. I soon discovered i was a little short on…

Well done, Larry.

Awwww that’s a nice story to share Larry. Every drawing or painting always has a story and a special memory for me personally. Thank you for sharing this. I’m looking forward to seeing the updated version ❤️❤️❤️

Larry, this is an incredibly powerful portrait.
Knowing that you drew this so many years ago makes it even more special. The mood, expression, and storytelling are already there, especially in the face and eyes. You clearly had a strong sense of character even back then.
It is also very inspiring to see your honesty about the journey and… Read more

Hi patricia
Your eye looks really nice. I did notice that the iris is a bit out of round.

merci

Read more

Looking good Anthony

Anthony, your shading is absolutely good 👍
You just need to concentrate a bit more on the basic shapes and proportions first. Once the structure is solid, your shading will sit even better on top of it.
Keep practicing, you are doing really well 😊1

You are really an expert with portraits 😊
The expression, the subtle smile, and the skin tones all feel natural and well observed. Nothing is overdone, and that balance is what makes it look so convincing 👍
Beautiful work. Keep going and keep sharing 🎨1- View 2 replies

Having looked at Christina’s old artwork I dug out an old scrapbook I had for Charcoal drawings, Aa couple of them are from the first time I joined Ali’s lessons, its funny when you look back at the time I thought they were great, not so sure now.😃

I actually love posts like this 😊
Looking back at old work is one of the best ways to see how far you have come. These drawings still have a lot going for them. Strong effort, clear forms, and real intention. At the time, they *were* great, because they represented your level and your curiosity back then 👍
What is beautiful is that now you… Read more1 -

Drawing Community 2 weeks agoGood evening. I am self taught via YouTube. I started sketching 5 years ago but had to take a break after 2 years due to elbow surgery. I am getting back into it and struggling. Why does my iris look so aweful? I had to take a break from it and move on in the tutorial. I cannot get my momo eraser to pick up like Ali does. I have mastered…

One thing that I’ve learned from Ali over the few months that I have been associated with the program is that you cannot be too light in the application of the graphite and, even more important, the blending. A light touch is indeed required so that you do not damage the paper and its ability to accept more graphite. I had the same problem…

Hi Krissy, I know the feeling but starting to get there, Good advice from Gordon, and well done with your drawing
-
Hey Krissy, I think this feels hard right now because the drawing is still unfinished, and that can really mess with how we see our own work 😊
What you have so far is actually good. If you are feeling low or not motivated enough to continue this piece right now, it is completely okay to start another project and just enjoy that process.… Read more
