In this exclusive real-time tutorial, you’ll watch how I construct and render a realistic sapphire gem using Faber-Castell Polychromos on Strathmore’s Toned Grey mixed media paper (11×14 inches). Starting with precise geometric measurements inspired by X and Y axis plotting, I carefully map out the gem’s outline and its individual facets to ensure symmetry and proportion — a process that feels almost like building a technical drawing. Once the structure is in place, I layer light blue (110), dark blue (151), and middle blue (156) to establish the gem’s luminous tones, blending them with a blender pencil for smooth gradients. Grey (274) and black (199) are used to push the contrasts, while white (101) adds sharp highlights and reflective shine, enhanced further with jelly roll pen accents. The shadow beneath the gem is also carefully built up with greys, blues, and black to anchor it realistically on the page. This tutorial is unique in showing how geometric construction meets color layering to create crystal-like realism, and it’s a great chance to practice precision, patience, and blending on toned paper. And as usual, the references of this tutorial are included in the Materials section.
