In this exclusive real-time tutorial, you’ll watch a bonus session from our Drawcember Challenge where my assistant demonstrates how to draw a realistic light bulb using graphite pencils on toned paper. Guided by techniques I’ve personally trained her in, she carefully builds up the form with smooth shading, clean edges, and layered tonal values that make the transparent glass appear three-dimensional. You’ll also see how subtle highlights transform the drawing, especially with the addition of a white gelly roll pen for extra sharp reflections that white pastel alone can’t achieve. This tutorial is a great chance to study how light interacts with glass and metal surfaces, and it will help you strengthen your control over highlights, contrast, and delicate textures. By following along, you’ll gain confidence in capturing reflective objects with precision while enjoying a different teaching perspective from within my own studio team. And as usual, the references of this tutorial are included in the Materials section.
