Drawing HOPE!
In this exclusive real-time tutorial, you’ll learn how to create a vibrant sunflower using Faber-Castell Polychromos color pencils, with Classic equivalents also listed so you can follow along with whichever set you own. This project is part of my larger HOPE artwork, but I’ve included it here separately so that if you just want to focus on the sunflower, you can complete it entirely in color without touching the graphite shoe portion. We’ll go step by step through layering techniques for rich yellow petals, blending sharp and soft highlights, building realistic contrast with browns and blacks, and adding depth using erasers for crisp light accents. You’ll also see how to texture the seed core with subtle erased dots, create smooth gradients in the leaves and stem, and balance highlights to make the entire flower pop in a three-dimensional way. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have a complete hyperrealistic sunflower drawing and the confidence to apply these same color layering and texturing techniques to any floral subject. And as usual, the references for this tutorial are included in the materials section.
