Drawing Colorful Bird using Pastels
In this exclusive realtime tutorial, we’ll draw a vibrant bee-eater bird using Faber-Castell Pitt pastel pencils on toned tan mixed media paper, combined with soft pastels for the background. Starting with grid-drawn outlines and masking the borders, I’ll show you how to build layered bases of green, yellow, blue, and brown, then blend them with fingers, cotton buds, and brushes for smooth transitions. You’ll learn how to add feather textures, highlights, shadows, and lifelike detailing to both the bird and its branch, while also seeing how pastels behave differently from graphite. This project is beginner-friendly and a great introduction to pastel pencils while still creating a realistic, colorful finish. References are included in the Materials section.
